We’re seeing auction houses misusing terms that have distinct numismatic meanings. This post showcases a few recent examples from Proxibid.
Never use the term “hairlines” if you mean Lady Liberty’s hair. The term “hairlines” refers to abrasions in a coin that often happen during harsh or improper cleaning or other damaging contacts. See the misuse of the term in the photo below. (Click to expand)
Likewise, never use the term “details” if you mean “devices.” The term “details” refers to problems with a coin that can range from alteration to artificial toning. See the misuse of the term in the photo below. (Click to expand)
Here’s another bad example of using the word “details” on an ANACS coin that is MS63. We almost didn’t bid on this coin because we spotted the word “details.”
